OCTOBER SAFETY

Seymour-Safety

October safety topics include fire safety, with an emphasis on preventing kitchen fires and using fire extinguishers correctly, along with general fire prevention measures like having an escape plan and checking smoke detectors.

Other topics are fall-related hazards like slips, trips, and falls from ladders, seasonal flu prevention and the importance of mental health, and home and electrical safety for decorations and heating.

Since October is also National Cybersecurity Month, practicing safe online habits by using strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and keeping software updated is essential. Fire Safety

  • Kitchen Safety: Never leave cooking unattended, turn off burners, and never use water on a grease fire.
  • Escape Plans: Create a family fire escape plan, practice it, and ensure everyone knows how to call emergency services from a safe location.
  • Smoke & CO Detectors: Install working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Decorations: Use LED lights instead of candles for Halloween, check extension cords for damage, and don't overload electrical outlets.
Seasonal Safety & Health
  • Flu Shots: October is the start of flu season, so get a flu shot to protect yourself and others.
  • Mental Health: Make time for self-care, as the approaching holidays can be a stressful time for many.
  • Home Heating: Prepare heaters and space heaters for use and ensure they are placed away from flammable materials.
Workplace & Home Safety
  • Ladder Safety: Be mindful of falls by using the right ladder for the job and maintaining three points of contact.
  • Slips and Falls: Keep walkways clear of leaves and other debris that can become slick when wet.
  • Electrical Safety: Inspect workplaces and homes for exposed wires, faulty equipment, and overloaded outlets.
National Cybersecurity Month
  • Strong Passwords & MFA: Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts and enable multi-factor authentication.
  • Software Updates: Keep your operating system, applications, and devices updated.
  • Phishing Awareness: Be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages asking for personal information.
