In May, several major safety observances are recognized to raise awareness for seasonal and year-round hazards. Primary Safety Observances in May

  • National Electrical Safety Month: Sponsored by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), this month focuses on preventing electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities. Key tips include inspecting power strips for overloads and ensuring GFCI protection is used in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • National Water Safety Month: This campaign highlights the importance of safe swimming practices and drowning prevention.   • Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Coordinated by the NHTSA, this month encourages motorists and motorcyclists to share the road safely. Drivers are urged to double-check blind spots, while riders are encouraged to wear DOT-compliant helmets.
  • Mental Health Awareness Month: While not exclusively physical safety, it is widely observed in May to support mental health journeys and reduce stigma in both personal and professional settings.
  • Building Safety Month: An international celebration to raise awareness about building safety codes and the importance of a safe and resilient built environment. EEI.org +8

  • Construction Safety Week & National Safety Stand-Down (May 4–8, 2026): A focus on fall hazard awareness and reviewing safety protocols in construction industries.
  • National Safe Boating Week (May 16–22): Promotes safe boating practices, emphasizing that everyone should wear a life jacket when on the water.
