Introduction

The Internet is a wonderful tool that allows us to learn in new ways and explore places we may never be able to actually visit. The key to a successful search is to narrow the search and use a good search engine. There are resources here to help you and directions so you can complete the required project. Your quest should take you to the best places to gather the information you need.

Task

After completing this web quest you will have the information you need to place in a travel brochure. You will present your finished project to the class before submitting it to be evaluated. You will then write a story detailing an adventure you create as you virtually tour your chosen country. This story is only limited by your own imagination! Some questions you will be answering are:

  • What country will you be visiting? You will also choose 4 places within this country to tour and include in the brochure. The places may be historical, architectural, or tourist attractions. You can choose one type or a mix of types. Your only limitation is that there must be a web site for the place you visit.
  • Is your country a United States ally?
  • Where is the American Embassy located in the country you are visiting?
  •                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Return to Top

    Process*
    1. To create an acceptable travel brochure, you must find, evaluate, summarize, and paraphrase relevant information. You will answer the project questions and use this information in a creative manner in your travel brochure and creative writing assignment.

    2. Open a Word document into which you will copy and paste information. You may find more information than what you need,  but don't worry about that at first; you will decide what information to paraphrase and insert into your brochure later. First, you will find and copy relevant information. Always remember to right click on the web site URL and copy, then paste it at the bottom of the information you want to keep. It will automatically turn into a link after you hit the Enter on your keyboard.

    3. As soon as you have pasted in the information needed to answer Question 1, save the Word document. Choose "Save as" and save it to your disk in the "A" drive. Title this information as Question 1. For each question, follow this same procedure. When you find a picture you may want to use, save it the same way, naming it something appropriate as to its content so you may find it when you need to insert it into the brochure.

    4. You will find some useful browsers and sites by going to "Resources" at the top of the page.

    5. Go to a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Then zero in on your country information by wording your search phrase carefully. Use quotation marks to enclose your subject or use the plus sign to connect topic information. For example: "Paris + French Restaurants". This will narrow your search considerably. Some sites will have a lot of the information you need for the project questions, some only a little information. If you find no sites for your country, you may need to get another country or expand your search!

    6. Remember to save your information as soon as you copy and paste it!

    7. Print out your pasted information if you need to in order to decide what you want to use and what you will delete. You may also want to work on paraphrasing your information at this time. Remember to save the URL for the information you use. You will give the teacher a list of the sites you used when you hand in the completed brochure.

    8. Begin paraphrasing the information about the places you toured. One way to do this is to click your cursor in after each sentence, rewriting it in your own words, then deleting the original. You might be able to paraphrase an entire paragraph, then delete the original. You will need two paragraphs for each of the four places you virtually tour.

    Project Questions

    Our World Trip

    Project Questions

You are embarking on a wonderful journey. You will be creating your own travel brochure for a country you visit online. After you create your travel brochure you will write a creative story that describes the many adventures you and your chosen companions enjoyed. Below you will find the questions you need to answer in order to complete your journey and build your travel brochure. You need to include information from project questions in your brochure. Have a great time!

  • What country will you be visiting?
  • Is your country a United States ally?
  • Where is the American Embassy located in the country you are visiting?
  • What is the language spoken in the country you are visiting? How will you communicate while there? Place 3-4 phrases from the language in appropriate spots in your brochure.
  • How will you get there? Airplane, ship, etc.?
  • How much will it cost to get there?
  • Where will you stay? Hotel, bed & breakfast, youth hostel, etc.
  • What will lodging / accommodations cost?
  • How long will your visit last?
  • How will you travel while in the country?
  • What will you eat while there? No American fast food – a local diet only. How much will it cost to dine in your chosen country? Find a local restaurant’s web site and pull up their menu for costs and items available.
  • After some research, choose four places you would like to tour while visiting. These may be historical monuments, landmarks, museums, etc. The places you choose must have a web site so you can download information and pictures to put in your brochure.
  • What will it cost to tour the places you have chosen? This information may be on the web site.
  • What are some other attractions you may want to visit? Do they have an admission charge or are they free?
  • What is the currency for your country? Can you find the exchange rate between your country and the United States?
  • If you or one of your companions had a medical emergency, what type of facilities are available? Hospitals like ours, or something different?
  •

Answer each of these questions and design a brochure describing how to get there, costs of transportation, etc. Then write two paragraphs describing each of the places you virtually visited. Make sure to import pictures, illustrations, etc. of the places visited. This is due in a rough draft form October 17. The final brochure is due October 21st.

Write a story using your travels as the setting of the story. You should include friends or family as part of the trip. The story must include descriptive writing, a plot/conflict, characters, dialogue, and a resolution. It must be 4-5 typed pages in length, 12 pt font, double-spaced, no bold or italics, and is due as a typed rough draft November 7, 2002. We will then peer edit the story using the rubric I will use to grade the paper. Your final story and the peer edited copy will be due November 14, 2002.

    Student Evaluations

This is the part where you get to evaluate the project and give me your opinions without penalty. In fact, you will receive 10 extra credit points for telling me exactly what you think! Answer the following questions by December 1, 2002. Be completely honest! Your answers will help me make this project more student friendly.

    1. What computer skills did you lean while working on this unit?

    2. Did you learn more about Internet research than you knew while working on this unit?

    3. What did you like about this unit?

    4. What did you dislike about this unit?

    5. Did you feel like you had sufficient time in the computer lab or with a computer to get the project completed?

    6. Did you like having deadlines along the way? Did the deadlines keep you focused?

    7. What do you think we need to do differently next year? (Do not say, "Don't do the project," because we will be doing this project again).
