General Info

All students are required to maintain a Science class notebook. This notebook will contain an information packet that parents may find useful. Information concerning the grading policy, extra credit, emergency procedures, laboratory safety, etc. is included. Each student is also required to keep an up-to-date record of his or her grade during each grading period. You may track your child’s progress by examining this sheet. At the midway point of each grading period you will receive a computer generated progress report indicating current grade status.  In addition to the progress report you will receive a Science class newsletter with up to date information on science class events.

       2.  One subject spiral (70 pages) college ruled notebook.
       3.  Insertable pockets (2)

Homework Philosophy

Special Note: Several years ago I made a decision about the way I assign homework.  I did not make this decision from the standpoint of being a teacher but one of being a parent.  Knowing how busy my own kids were with sports and family activities I changed my philosophy of assigning homework.  Over the years since implementing this philosophy the number of assignments turned in on time and the quality of work has increased.

During the first week of the school year I promised my students that I would assign "NO OVERNIGHT HOMEWORK."  That means no assignment will be given today and due tomorrow.  In fact many assignments may have three or more days before it is due.   With the amount of time allotted students should be able to complete an assignment fully and correctly.  This also gives the student opportunity to seek help if needed.

Students must realize their responsibilities toward completing their homework.   With a reasonable and extended amount of time being given a student has "no excuse" for not producing high quality work and having it ready on the day it is due.

Extra Credit

A variety of Extra Credit Activities will be made available each grading period.  Students should take advantage of these opportunities if they see that their grade does not meet the expectations of themselves or their parents. A list of all Extra Credit activities for the grading period can be found on the Assignments page of this website.

"LUNCH TIME SCIENCE CLASS" (LTSC)

Due to a large number of missed of failed assignments in science class it became necessary to create a special lunch time detention known as "Lunch Time Science Class".  (LTSC)

Students required to attend LTSC  will report to Room 301 at the beginning of their lunch period on the date assigned.  The student will spend 15 minutes in class before being allowed to go to lunch. Ample time will be given for the student to eat before they are to report to their next class.  It may be necessary for a student to report to LTSC  for more than one day to complete their assignment.

Work completed during LTSC  will replace missing or failed assignments. Grades will be determined as an average of the original or missing assignment and the newly completed assignment. Only homework and assignment grades will be made up during LTSC.  (Test, quiz, project, lab, etc. grades can be made up at other times if the student has an excused absence from class.) Failure to attend LTSC  on the date assigned will result in a zero (0) on the assignment and detention.

I hope that two things are accomplished by requiring students to attend LTSC:

1.)  By allowing students to make-up work their final nine-week grading period grade will improve.
2.) Students will be encouraged to do high quality work the first time and hopefully avoid LTSC
     in the future

If you have any questions about LTSC  please do not hesitate to call or email me. I can be reached at 522-5453 ext. 2301 or Elliottp@scsc.k12.in.us.

"Chasing the Standards"

Aligning classroom instruction with state standards is my highest priority as a science teacher.  Given the nature of some of the standards it is sometimes a difficult thing to do.  My goal is to produce curricular units and activities that will engage students in meaningful learning while allowing for individual differences and learning styles.  Accomplishing all of the standards in the course of a school year is a challenge.  Below you will find a link to see how and when I will attempt to address the standards this year in science class.
Special Note:  For parents with children younger than 8th grade, please be aware that Science was added to ISTEP testing in the Fall 2005 for Grade 7 and will begin in Fall 2007 for Grade 9.  (Note:  Due to state budget constraints science testing for Grade 9 has yet to take place.  New science standards are in the process of being approved with planned implementation for the 2011-2012 school year.)
